A Historic Night for South Carolina Democrats

On November 3, Charleston County voters helped make history.

Dr. Annie Andrews, a Charleston pediatrician, defeated Darline Graham to become the first woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate from South Carolina, and the state’s first Democratic senator since 1998. Charleston County gave her one of her strongest margins in the state, voting for her by more than 26 points.

In Congressional District SC-01 which spans much of Charleston County, retired Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore flipped the seat blue and is headed to Congress. Rep. Jim Clyburn was re-elected in Congressional District SC-06. Across South Carolina, Democrats flipped nine State House seats, breaking the Republican supermajority.

Here in Charleston County, voters elected Democrats up and down the ballot:

State House
JA Moore, District 15 (re-elected)
Tiffany Spann-Wilder, District 109 (re-elected)
Wendell Gilliard, District 111 (re-elected)
Courtney Waters, District 113 (re-elected)
Nick Uricchio, District 115
Clay Middleton, District 116
Leon Stavrinakis, District 119 (re-elected)

County Council
Teddie Pryor, Sr., District 5 (re-elected)
Charles Glover, Sr., District 8
Jaxie Ferguson, District 9

County Offices
Tamara Curry, Probate Judge
Karen Hollings, Register of Deeds (re-elected)

None of this happened by accident. It happened because volunteers knocked doors, made calls, handed out materials, and talked to their neighbors. To everyone who gave their time, their money, and their vote: thank you!
